I haven't been out to any libraries to check out a new book in a while, so I'm going to cheat and mention one I own again.
This is far from the best edition of D&D ever, but it is the most current one and the one most players use these days. Does your library have it on shelf? Does your library have a designated social space where local players can come to meet? Does your library have a dedicated gaming group? The answers to all three should be yes!
Bear in mind that this is just one Dungeons & Dragons book, and that Dungeons & Dragons is just one of many roleplaying games out there. It would definitely be a good idea to have more than just this book in your collection. Maybe some sample books from earlier editions of the game for historical context, and then some books from 3-4 other RPGs for variety ("If you like D&D, then try..."). But if you had to have just one book on shelf, it should be this one because it's the bare minimum players need to make a character and begin playing.
At $50 it's a pricey book, but you can often find it on sale, sometimes for half that price. Until you do own a copy, you can always access a stripped down (and in many ways actually better) version of the rules for free here.
