I touched on this when I last talked about Elgin's Gail Borden Public Library, but they are doing a great job nowadays of working in partnership with local businesses.
This is a "scavenger hunt" going on now in downtown Elgin, which (if the weather isn't too hot to keep everyone at home) is a great way to encourage families to visit local businesses. Several favorites of mine are on that list too.
The library doesn't directly benefit from partnering with local businesses -- no one is paying a fee (I'm pretty sure, anyway) to be a part of this scavenger hunt. In the long run, it improves the library's standing in the community to be seen as a part of the community instead of apart from the community. Local business owners will be more likely to use the library or recommend the library -- driving traffic the library's way, just as the scavenger hunt drove traffic to the local businesses.
