Slugfest!

I know I should be reading a novel; I have not thoroughly enjoyed reading/listening to an entire novel since last November and figure I'm due. But first...

There's a lot of familiar ground in this story -- just about any history of Marvel Comics or DC Comics or comic book history in general talks about the stakes to become the biggest fish in the comic book pond.

But there's a lot more here than what you usually get, including a lot of humorous anecdotes and quotes of things remembered being said at the time. Reed seems to have done his homework, and perusing the end notes reveals that he scoured histories, biographies, magazines, fanzines, and even blogs for additional information to flesh out this story.

This is a great book to have the full story all in one place. For many libraries dedicated to research and the academic study of comic books, it may be too late to order most of the sources cited within (most are dated 1998-2005, with some as early as 1940). However, Alter Ego magazine, which is frequently cited, is still going strong...
