Full disclosure: I am not very far into it yet. I'm a little anxious about it, actually. I love Tolkien -- J.R.R. Tolkien. The Hobbit is my absolute favorite non-comic book book, and The Lord of the Rings isn't far behind. But Christopher Tolkien...I can respect his desire to not add too much to his father's notes -- and, indeed, some people would loudly complain if he did take such liberties. But these books he's edited just summarize plots. Names are placeholders for characters with no characterization yet. Without Bilbo or Frodo, I'm left with no one to care about in Middle Earth.
I'm trying not to set the bar too high; as long as I enjoy this more than The Simarillion, I'm doing okay. Come on, Christopher, balance all that negativity out with some happy, funny, or heartwarming things!
