Policy allowing hate groups to meet at libraries comes under fire
"The American Library Assn. is under fire for a new policy that will allow hate groups to meet in their facilities.
"Technically,
the library group adopted an interpretation revision to its Library
Bill of Rights that states that libraries should allow hate groups to
use their facilities for meetings..."
Forty years later, library boards in the Chicagoland area still grapple with the issue of what happened when the Village of Skokie stood up to a neo-nazi hate group. Yes, hate needs to be condemned, but that also means allowing hate to rear its head publicly so it can be exposed. No one should mistake a library allowing hate speech with condoning that hate speech, and libraries can post signage all around the group stating just how opposed to what the group stands for the library is.
